CLR in Miami at WMC 2012 at the National Hotel

Last year, my favorite WMC event was CLR @ the Electric Pickle on a Wednesday. The same line up, but in a smaller and much darker venue. I can barely contain my excitement, it's not every day that my favorite DJs show up on our shores to spin. And it's equally uncommon for a CLR crew to be spinning at a pool party in the middle of a hot Miami day. I know what you are thinking: techno & sunshine? Usually we like our techno with a side of dark and grungy after hours. But if you take one look at the National Hotel's pool, you will be sold on it as well. Not to mention, you would be experiencing some of the best talent around with Monoloc, Tommy, Chris, Drumcell and special guests. So if you are going to be in Miami for WMC, I highly recommend that you purchase your tickets now from Resident Advisor. I leave you with one of my favorite Monoloc tracks, Nohouse:

How could I have possibly snoozed this summer on such an amazing EP? It probably wouldn't have been fit for me to find it this summer. I was in Miami, in some serious heat, and all this EP reminds me of is a cold night, an end of autumn merging into winter scene on the edges of a deserted corner of Lake Baikal (remember my obsession with this area?) Reading Boris Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago didn't help much with alleviating my obsession with Siberia. So in a way, it's better I came across it now when the temperature outside my window is dropping steadily as we approach October and the sun is nowhere to be found. This is my ode to my last autumn. I listen to this EP while I drink in the cold weather because come next year, I will leave it all behind.

My friends are all hoping I would get on the deep house bandwagon after the summer had come to an end. I am trying, I really am. I love being with my friends but I detest being at an event where I want to poke my ears out (throw in some funk and I am OUT the door). So it would help me out if I was on the same page as them. For example, this year I skipped out on CLR in Detroit at DEMF so that I can be with my friends at Circo Loco in the morning... ugh. But so far, I am still in my own techno // minimal ish groove. It's times like these when I really question my motives in moving to Miami instead of Toronto. Toronto will always be the one place in my heart where the best music is being played at any hour of the weekend.. often spilling into the next week. This is a set by Chris Larsen, a very talented Toronto local that I have watched many many times in that dark venue that always feels like home. It stings some of the Detroiters that my favorite place to dance in is nowhere near Detroit.. but when in Detroit I am often forced to listen to disco, deep house, or lukewarm tech house.. I will take Chris Larsen, Mikey Terrazano, and Alicia Hush over it any day. To me, there is no comparison.

What can you expect from two Techno giants? A whole lot of powerful and relentless sort of beats... but not quite overpowering. Restrained almost, unalloyed, playful. Human Reason sounds like one big happy bouncy ball of a collaboration. Pleasurable but not groundbreaking. I could get down to it. But could I pick it out like I can pick out a Monoloc or Tommy Four Seven track? Probably not. Simple Maze conjures up images of a deformed Jeckyll and Hyde.. maybe just Hyde making his way through an elaborate maze in search for you. I love it. Patrick Seich's remix doesn't interest me. I can see Tor becoming a huge hit on the dance floor. The build up alone adjacent the jazzy voice overlay is enough to make a crowd go crazy (I have seen it many times in that genre I want nothing to do with.. funky/disco/deep house). It's hard enough to please the techno lovers and gives enough of a "retro" feel to probably please the Jamie Jones/Troxler cult. I can never be sure though.

Let's talk talent. Synonymous with Anthony Attalla and his label, Incorrect Music. Today, Incorrect Music released an amazing EP, one I can't quite unglue myself from... even though I am right in the middle of finals. Per usual, I can't decide which one I love more. Motormouth has a crisp, subdued quality to it. Feels like you are waking up from a haze, constantly going in and out of consciousness.. until you are unobtrusively jabbed back into reality only to find yourself going back down the rabbit whole again... what's not to love? Patrick Seich's remix brings you back to life, only to tease you in a slower fashion. But I have decided on a favorite.. Photon Itch is superb!!

Why does it feel more and more like the minimal beatport chart sounds like the tech house chart? I think we need to clean house a little. Here is Super Flu doing it proper. Also, a little tip for DJs and their agents/labels - when your DJ releases a really sick track (or for that matter, any track) plaster it all over Soundcloud or Youtube. Really, it only takes a few minutes and has a huge impact.

Miss me? I have to attribute my lack of posts to sort of a languid, self deprecating, darker mood. I could blame it on the pounds of work I've had to do these past couple of weeks. But that has never really been an impediment to my music.

This is the kind of mood I've been in lately.. darker than before. WMC wasn't dark enough for me. While my friends were out at the Get Physical Yacht Party with Audio Fly, M.A.N.D.Y. Jamie Jones (Here), I was scrambling to find the darkest techno around. Marco Carola and Loco Dice at Space on a sunny Friday morning.. didn't please me. M-nus party at Sunday School Friday Night.... didn't even begin to satisfy my thirst (Gaizer, Magda, JPLS etc). Paco Osuna didn't mesmerize me like he once used to. I don't know where I got lost but I went down the deep hole and can never return. Sunday School on the actual Sunday of WMC, I danced around with my friends outside to ... Josh Wink (never thought I would type those words) only because I wanted to enjoy time with DC & friends. If I had the power to get my hands on all the tracks he played and make them disappear forever in an alternate Jamie Jones-Art Department funky disco/deep house universe, I would do it in a heart beat.

WMC wasn't enough. It left me with kind of a sour taste for a couple of weeks.. except for CLR night with Monoloc, Chris Liebing, Tommy Four Seven, I could have skipped all the events.

I need more and I need it darker. And Gaga never disappoints.

I feel as if lately I am just running through my favorites. Monoloc, Tommy, Stimming, Max... but can I help that they all released albums around the same week? If I felt like being selfish, I would only post Solace. It is the only track off the EP in which I knew with certainty that Max Cooper has returned to his former glory. And that he brought his ghoulish and emotional sound along with him. Gravity's Rainbow reminisces of Max Cooper.. but doesn't quite reach it for me. It's like getting me to make oatmeal in the morning. I mess it up every time but it still tastes a little like it's supposed to. It's just not my style.. But where I dislike something, there are a thousand others who will treasure it. Heresy is enjoyable. I feel the remixes just distort Max's sound.. I am not a fan of them.

While I was initially disappointed and thought the album to be no more than a collection of artfully crafted Stimming-esque sounds.. I (like always) grew to love it more than I thought I would. But let's be clear on something: this album is not a narrative like Reflections. There may not be one single track that will be eternally embeded in your memory like the fresh scent of a childhood memory (Song for Isabelle.. After Eight?). You may even forget the sounds you hear on Liquorice. You may not even recognize them if they are to be remixed. You may, in fact, be disappointed. But if you are, you have missed the beauty of Liquorice - while it may sound like Stimming childishly recorded the most peculiar sounds he could find (and coincidentally all acoustic, melodic, indie apartment sounds) and mashed them all together in Liquorice, the album listened to all in one sitting is... performative. I can't deny that I expected a delicious narrative much like Reflections.. and tracks that could stand alone, but I am delighted. It's as if we can really see what goes on in Stimming's head as soon as his head lifts off the pillow and he sheepishly stumbles around his apartment. I was lucky to have met him briefly at Sunday School. Much like his album, he seemed coy and a bit frazzled. Maybe it was because his set was interrupted by a moody laptop. Or maybe it was the exhausting Miami heat. Regardless, Stimming is our electronic music generation's prized jewel. To appreciate him, we must understand him in all his peculiar, melodious glory.

Tommy Four Seven - Primate

Remember when I called Tommy Four Seven the Prince of Techno? Here? I retract my earlier statement. Tommy is the Techno King. And he reigns supreme.

After seeing Monoloc at the Electric Pickle during Winter Music Conference and unfortunately missing Tommy Four Seven (the next day was riddled with interviews for me) I am making it my mission to see him spin at Berghain. Although I didn't get to see Tommy spin, I did see him bopping around behind the decks when Monoloc and Chris Liebing were spinning. Tommy Four Seven likes to put out a big sound... it's quite deceiving because he is so little I could put him in my pocket. Lucky for us, the only size that matters is the size of his talent. And Tommy couldn't be any bigger.

There is not a sound Tommy could create that I wouldn't like. And we all know Armed 3 is my favorite techno track up to date.. but G completely stole my heart. I don't doubt that it will also steal yours.

We met Monoloc!!!

So excited for the fact that I flew into Miami for the unofficial Winter Music Conference on Wednesday of last week. I had tickets for the Mindshake party at the Shelborne but thankfully this event popped up last minute and we decided to go. And I heard Mindshake wasn't spectacular anyways.... The CLR night at the Electric Pickle started off rather.... sparse. The newly remodeled venue was barely moving and people were trickling in very slowly. Glad we decided to stay because Monoloc played the best set I heard all throughout the week. You may think it must have been terrible for me to hear the best set of the week right at the first event... but I thoroughly enjoyed all of the other events I went to and heard other memorable sets. But MONOLOC! I can't even explain why his set was so incredible - probably because of his unique style. Want to hear what hell sounds like? Listen to Monoloc. Unfortunately, the smoke at the Pickle made me cough so hard that I had to go outside to breathe for a minute. And lucky for us! Monoloc decided to join us. When Cio D'or was announced for DEMF, it blew me out of my chair. But I wanted to push my luck and I asked the Techno Gods (Paxahau) for Ben Klock... and my wish came true!! You will probably find me melted on the festival grounds in between stages this year. Although, a little birdy told me that the venue may be changing in May, I just hope the festival can keep the same momentum as it does on concrete as much as on grass.. Does this kid ever sleep? I didn't post this album as soon as it came out because.. well honestly I didn't like it that much. But thankfully, I gave it a few days and it steadily grew on me. For Hans, this is an exercise in constraining the force and talent he usually smacks us with. Depth Change is the ship that steers the EP. God, if I could live in an alternative universe, I would immerse myself in a complete dystopia. Totalitarian government, secret insurgence, wrought with fear and anxiety we would all take our anger out in an illegal underground venue with Depth Change blaring over the speakers. Depth Change is the most beautifully crafted track on the EP. It's eerily beautiful. Pretenders is easily forgettable. Realize is another exercise in creating a soundtrack for a despotic world. If Orwell could make you listen to music as you read 1984, Depth Change and Realize would be on the track list. But for Hans, Realize is... abecedarian. The good kind. The Wanderer has potential. But there is something so ridiculously irritating about it. Oh yes, that disrupting sound effect so reminiscent of trance. Drop it out of the track, and you have yourself a decent beat.

Tickets are $25 right now. But honestly, I would have paid $100 for EACH. Such talent under one roof is unheard of (unless you find yourself at Sunday School where one DJ if afforded a measly hour to spin...) Very glad I decided to book my tickets for the unofficial Winter Music Conference in Miami starting the week off on Wednesday. I would have been in a deep state of depression if I would have missed Monoloc and Tommy Four Seven, the two I have never seen before but for whom I have longed to hear their dark, protruding techno sounds live. Chris Liebing, I have seen before but it will be such a treat to see them all in one spot.

JMF - Got the Bends on FHD Records

Got the Bends is a great floor track. Dropped on any dance floor, and you wouldn't be able to resist dancing. It's got a rhythm you would probably recognize from other minimal tracks but that doesn't necessarily steal its thunder. Jenny Says What is such a teaser. It's luscious vibe is absolutely entrancing. When the track is not seducing you, it drops a bassline made conspicuously softer through no means I can easily discern. It's Free takes the winning medal for me. The heavier bassline and distorted voice is what got me. Will I ever get out of this phase?

There's a certain air of unbridled sophistication with this album. I wish I knew more about its producer, JMF!

Feels like I haven't written in so long! But in my defense, I had an absolutely insane week. On Tuesday, I unexpectedly flew to Ft. Lauderdale for an interview with a Bankruptcy and Foreclosure firm. I flew out Wednesday and crafted my closing argument for court for the next morning on the plane. Thursday, I was stuck in court from 7:45am-12:00pm.. where I got a good spanking form the judge. Kidding. But he did ask an awful lot of questions and was unsympathetic to our client. Pile on some classes and some more homework and by Friday I could no longer fend off the exhaustion. Looks like I missed a few amazing releases. This is Pueblo off Hyde EP.. I enjoy it much more than Hyde. Great track.

I can't choose. But if I must, I enjoyed Krypton.085 in true Hans Bouffmyhre fashion. What begins as a disinterested and conservative rhythm slowly turns into a miasma of sounds bound to make you sick. Where does he get his talent, this Hans? The original Krypton.085 trudges along at an even pace. Not my preferred pace but it does the job rather well. It's demanding in an affable way. Submerge's Remix of Krypton.085 aggrandizes the whole feel of the track. I would love it except for that irritating rubbing sound effect. Ramius, the original, is the best track in my opinion. Remember my weakness for distorted male voices? Coupled with such a persistent beat, I simply cannot resist. This track will be on repeat for the upcoming week! I suggest you buy the album. But before you do, find a way to effectively protest Beatport's ridiculous album prices :D

Unfortunately I bought my tickets long before the line up came out. I would rather avoid Art Department, Jamie Jones, and Damian Lazarus (Lazarus put me to sleep one year at Karu & Y...) So it looks like I may be changing my plans. Cassy would be fun to see though. I may have posted some of these before, but here are some pictures from last year's CircoLoco party @ Eden Roc Hotel. My friends and I were a little bit disappointed when the day started - I showed up by myself to Eden Roc and it was still raining! But WMC always pulls through. I met some awesome Cali people and the rain let up. By the time my friends arrived, the music was superb. Davide Squillace, Matthias Tanzmann, Rhadoo + Pedro, Tania Vulcano, DJ Sneak had us dancing until late. Should I stay or should I go this year? I have tickets for other events the same night... time will tell.

If Carlo Lio produced more techno, this is what it would sound like. A schizophrenic, irresistible beat with a touch of detached, ghoulish sound effects. And I am only talking about Jaws. Move has that salt shaker sound effect I love. It occasionally collides with the sound of waves washing upon a shore.. but all in a distant, more modern future. This is what techno sounds like in 2033. No qualms, no loose ends, no fancy bells. A pure, unadulterated beat dotted by a minimalistic voice calling out "Listen to me" and "Move"... Move is definitely my favorite. I can easily picture a Matrix like world of people dancing to Move in some underground futuristic club fighting the resistance of technology by turning up the volume on the amount of emotion they can feel in one night. System took some getting used to. Intron departs from the whole feel of the EP.

On a cursory review, I fell in love with Flavio Diaz's remix. Almost sounds like tech house to me.. a darker brand nonetheless. Add in those infectious drums and I am a happy camper. But then I came around to relish in Pig & Dan's more subdued techno take on Synapse. Pig & Dan's remix remind me of the nights I spent at Social Club in Paris. The whole room was so foggy you couldn't see two people ahead of you. But in the distance you could see faint interchangeable neon lights in the shape of a cube. And you didn't question your surroundings.. you just kept on dancing. And then finally, Spektre's original cast a heavy spell on me. Lesson learned: listening to techno should never be a rushed experience.

These are my two favorites off Brain Disease EP... why remix when the originals are so damn good? Goodbye Anxiety EP was so amazing that it was going to last me into the next few months, but Hans decided to blast us with another EP. I am definitely not complaining. I cannot express how fortunate I feel to be seeing him in March in Chicago. Usually talent like this develops overseas well before it decides to visit our hip-hop/pop infused nation. They play all over European clubs until they reach the Mecca, Berlin. Then America comes as an afterthought.

If there is anything I hate more than Funk/Disco, it's tepid tech house. I retract. I hate 99% of Crosstown Rebel productions more than I hate lukewarm tech house. But I digress. If the tech house I am listening to is devoid of any energy, or doesn't come up to par to Carlo Lio's tech house, I will remove myself from the event. I would rather go take a nap.

On the flip side, when tech house sounds like Bader, Nico + Martinez's track, I will do whatever I can to remain at said event. Can you sit and relax to this track? Absolutely not. If you are like me, your feet will naturally carry you onto the dance floor. Martinez whipped up a fantastic narcotic remix that would keep me dancing well into the morning.

On this note, I would like to express my gratitude to the labels and DJs that e-mail me their promos. There is nothing I love more than listening to and promoting great music, especially when it's conveniently sitting in my inbox. But if your music or the music of the DJ you represent is considered "deep house" or sounds anything like Crosstown Rebels would release, please don't waste your time.

And here we have another EP in which it is astonishingly hard to choose a favorite track. And although I usually like my techno to sound more evil, These Days EP on SubSensory Recordings, as a whole is irresistible. The first track, These Days takes a pretty cheeky rhythm and transforms it into what could easily become a techno anthem. A few listens in and it's imprint secures a strong hold on my memory. It's one of those tracks that once dropped can transform a whole dance floor. Captured offers a more unnerving feeling until the thicker baseline swoops in. Slave is crafted in a similar spirit but intensified: loud, visceral, blaring through its controlled confines. Almost sounds like it's spilling at the seams. Taberner has weaved a magnificent techno tapestry with Slave. I know I said I couldn't choose one.... but I think I just did. Definitely looking forward to more from Taberner!

But FWD offers a morbid, distressing sound. Almost as if you know the end is coming and you can hear it in the distance. And as inconsolable as the whole experience makes you feel, you keep on walking towards your destiny. Who better to put me in a saturine mood than Donato?

Fractures EP on Impact Mechanics

I was going to review Alan Fitzpatrick's Insurgent Series album released on Drumcode tonight.. and was feeling pretty disappointed because I hate giving bad reviews to producers whose work I've enjoyed in the past. I shouldn't say bad.. Alan's album is tepid at best. And while I was straining to find a track I sort of enjoyed on that album, I came across the Fractures EP on Impact Mechanics, a Chicago based label that absolutely blew me away in 5 tracks.

It all begins with BCR Boys' Fractures, a track that in a way foreshadows what's to come. Weaved in is what sounds like vibrating vintage pipes pestering the heavy and lugubrious beat. Kroman Celik's Levi Civita is by far my favorite. About a minute in to its quick paced full blooded techno concerto, the volume is unexpectedly turned up and the baseline makes repeated appearances and then unscheduled disappearances. I think that's what makes it so appealing for me. The base is playing hide and go seek with remnants of radio speeches. How could you not love it?

Issues by BCR Boys steals your attention with what sounds like a salt shaker. Who knows and who cares? When a track steals your attention away so quickly, you can't help but love it and all its glorious and peculiar sound effects.

Clik's Gyres offers a more subdued techno sound. Same style and same pace but it's eeriness shines right through that calm and collected exterior.

And last, Celik's Analeague brings it all full circle. It slows the EP down considerably and after the ride you just took, you need this track. But in a way, it's deceiving. Right when you think things are winding down, Analeague pumps the base and keeps it running till the end.

I love how great tracks come from every source imaginable. Who can consistently put out records that stand the test of time? Except for maybe the legends (and rightfully so), there aren't many. But the joy in music is the curiosity and excitement that arises in finding the next one. For me, the effect lasts.. maybe a week or two. And then I am on the hunt again. Like a wolf, my hunger pains stronger the longer I go. I am starved and irritated when circumstances force me to listen to the same productions into the second week. The more work I have, the more irritated I get. And then morning comes, and out of nowhere, a name I have never seen before, a remix I couldn't even distinguish from original manifests in my bose headphones and I am alive again. And although I laboriously search the "big names" and expect a consistent stream of sounds from their camps, I am disappointed. The best tracks come from unknowns.

Throw in a sinister and distorted laugh and I am floored. Every single time.
